Teesta River near Singtam

Teesta River, a tributary of the Jamuna River, flowing through Bangladesh and India. It rises in the Himalayas close to Chunthang in Sikkim (India), flow to the south, wounding a deep gorge throughout the Siwalik Hills east of Darjiling (in the West Bengal, India), turns southeast to run through the “Sivok Khola” pass onto the plains of West Bengal. Originally, the river sustained southward to empty in a straight line into the upper Padma River (also Ganga River). Approximately 1787, however, the river changed its route to flow eastward, crossing the Rangpur area of Bangladesh to join the Jamuna River close to Chilmari after a total route of approximately 200 miles (320 km).
