Lachung has been describe as the most charming village of Sikkim by British explorer “Joseph Dalton Hooker” in his ultimate, the Himalayan Journal (1855). Skiing is conducted in Phuni close to this town. Lachung is a town, hill station in northeast Sikkim, India. It is situated in the North Sikkim region close to the edge with Tibet. Lachung is at an height of approx 9,600 and at the confluence of the Lachung Rivers and lichen, both tributary of the River Teesta. The word Lachung means ‘small pass’. The town is about 125 kms from the capital Gangtok.
Situated approximately 18kms from Lachung, the powdered snowstorm offers a superb chance to ski enthusiast that glide downward the smooth slopes of the snow clad mountain here. An idyllic place for most excellent skiing holidays in India, Phuni Valley in Sikkim is completely a must see. Yume Samdong (Zero Point)
Yumesamdong is also called Zero Pont, Yomesamdong along with Katau and Yumthang make Lachung an enormously attractive travel destination. Zero Point or Yumesamdong is a awesome place to visit during spring or winter. Best time of the year is March and April. During this time the road is motor able and the area will be mostly snow covered. Oxygen density here is a bit lower, should be careful. During last week of December to May first week it is all enclosed with snow. The view will even be enhanced, one gets to see the Himalayan Blue Sheep which is tremendously rare grazing on the pasture.
The Sikkim Valley of Flowers sanctuary or Yumthang Valley, is a nature sanctuary with river, yaks, hot springs and grazing pasture on rolling meadows bounded by the Himalayan mountains in the North Sikkim region of Sikkim state in India.
Lachung was recognized in 1880, it means a “small mountain”.Lachung Monastery is a Nyingma Buddhist gompa in the Lachung Valley, Sikkim, northeastern India. Lachung is at an height of about 3,000 m at the confluence of the Lachung River and Lachen River, tributaries of the Teesta River.
Bhim Nala Falls
Bhim Nala falls is one of the biggest and most powerful. When we were visiting it, one of the two bridge, was broken. We still stopped up and tooks good pictures. They have a temporary bridge at the middle of the falls to take pictures.
Best Time to visit Lachung
Best time to visit “Lachung” is throughout the year as this city is enclosed by mountains, you can get enjoyable atmosphere. Best Season to visit Lachung is “October to June” as the temperature is approximately 10°c to 16°c.
How to reach Lachung
By Air : Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri serves as the closest airport to Lachung. Bagdogra Airport is linked with rest of India by nearly all home airlines. Direct flights to Bagdogra from Guwahati, Delhi and Kolkata are also available. One can hire local cabs or buses from Bagdogra Airport to reach Lachung.
By Train : Lachung doesn’t have its own railway station, the nearest railway station is “New Jalpaiguri”. Major trains from Guwahati and West Bengal serve the town of New Jalpaiguri. The station also connect New Jalpaiguri to other important Indian cities by a number of trains. Public buses and Private cabs or can be hired to reach Lachung from New Jalpaiguri which is around 127 km away.
By Bus : Direct buses are available from Gangtok and New Jalpaiguri which can be availed to reach Lachung.
