The Sikkim Valley of Flowers sanctuary or Yumthang Valley, is a nature sanctuary with river, yaks, hot springs and grazing pasture on rolling meadows bounded by the Himalayan mountains in the North Sikkim region of Sikkim state in India. It is at an altitude of 3,564 m above msl at a distance of 150 kms from the state capital Gangtok.
It is also know an the Valley of Flowers, it is a house to the “Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary” which has over 24 type of the rhododendrons, the state flower. The high point time is from late February to mid of June. When countless flowers blossom to carpet the valley in bright hues of rainbow. A bough of the river Teesta flow past the valley, the closest inhabited centre and the town of Lachung.

Lachung Monastery, Yumthang Valley
Lachung was recognized in 1880, it means a “small mountain”.Lachung Monastery is a Nyingma Buddhist gompa in the Lachung Valley, Sikkim, northeastern India. Lachung is at an height of about 3,000 m at the confluence of the Lachung River and Lachen River, tributaries of the Teesta River.
Zero Point, Yumthang, Yumthang Valley
Yumesamdong is also called Zero Pont, Yomesamdong along with Katau and Yumthang make Lachung an enormously attractive travel destination. Zero Point or Yumesamdong is a awesome place to visit during spring or winter. Best time of the year is March and April. During this time the road is motor able and the area will be mostly snow covered. Oxygen density here is a bit lower, should be careful. During last week of December to May first week it is all enclosed with snow. The view will even be enhanced, one gets to see the Himalayan Blue Sheep which is tremendously rare grazing on the pasture.
Yumthang River, Yumthang Valley
The Yumthang River is a famous tourists attraction in the “Yumthang Valley”. Also called Yumthang Chu, this river flow through the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary that is bounded by Rhododendron shrubs and trees. Towards the right of this river deceit a hot spring, which is frequent by tourist year round.
Chungthang, Yumthang Valley
“Chungthang” is a beautiful town located at the confluence of River Lachung Chu and River Lachen. This town of North Sikkim is situated at an average altitude of 1,790 metres. As per the faith of local people, “Guru Padmasambhabwa” visited this town previous to going to Tibet. The rock where he once rested still has his footprints. Furthermore, paddy which usually does not grow in this region, can be seen rising in the region of the rock. There is one more legend according to which “Guru Nanak Dev Ji” also visited this place on his way to Tibet and China.
Best time to visit Yumthang Valley of Flowers
The best time to take a trip to “Yumthang valley commences” from late February and lasts till June. Mid of June is the time when several colourful flowers blossom. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy a clear sky, brilliant view of snow capped mountains, then the time start from September and end in December would be an ideal time to visit this place.

By Air : Gangtok airport is the closest airports Lachung. From there daily flights are available to various destinations. You will have to take a bus, cab or taxi from here to reach Lachung. From “Lachung”, transport services are available to get to Yumthang Valley.
By Train : “Lachung railway station” is close to the city which is without difficulty accessible by road. You can hire any of the bus, cab or taxi to reach there.
